Dear BEMS members,

During this trouble period of Covid pandemic, we are all upset that we were not able to meet in person and, deprived of our expected BioEM 2020 scientific meeting in Oxford that we were looking forward to participate. We will however hold our Annual Business Meeting via videoconference, on July 9th, 2020, 2:00-3:30 pm, CEST time. The agenda is available for members under the Society / Society Business page. For a better balance of meeting time over the BEMS World members, time of the meeting has been shifted one hour forward, as modified in the corresponding documents.

Our TPC and LOC are still working to produce a report of all accepted abstracts for BioEM 2020, however this collection cannot be called a “proceeding of meeting abstracts”, as the meeting itself could not be hold, with all the fruitful discussions that usually come around the platform presentations, including tutorials, plenaries and workshops, and around the posters and the coffee-breaks. We address them our warmest thanks for their efforts to get the best possible use of this work, which became partly vanished.

Our special thanks to Azadeh Peyman from Public Health England and Sami Gabriel from Vodafon UK, and all members of the LOC who worked long and hard to find sponsors and all the arrangements in place and then had to go through all the cancellations and reimbursements. We thank the TPC, chaired by Alexandre Legros and Maxim Zhabodov, as well as the dozens of reviewers of the abstracts initially prepared for the scientific program. Taking again the opportunity here to remind colleagues to check for spams at the period of reviewing the abstracts after the submission deadline usually in March every year.

During this year, work continued, although on a slower pace due to inevitable need to organize virtual meetings taking into account all the time differences.

The merging committee had already achieved good progress before the current limitations imposed on us, and we will soon give you a summary of its actions.

New members have joined our society and will be welcome at our ABM.

We want to thank our leaving BOD members Alexandre Legros, replaced as Secretary by Azadeh Peyman, Kenichi Yamazaki, chair of the Membership Committee; we enjoy welcoming our new President-elect and past-Treasurer Marnus Van Wyk, replaced as Treasurer by Bennett Ibey, and a new Board member: Satoshi Nakasono. We also want to thank the candidates who have not been elected this year and are welcome to propose their service next year.

The d’Arsonval Award could be attributed through different deserving candidates to our past President and Editor-in-Chief of the BEMS Journal Ben Greenbaum. His talk will be delivered next year at BioEM 2021 in Honolulu, Hawai, hosted as LOC by Rich and Pam Nuccitelli.

We hope to see you in person next year, June 13-18, in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA!!
